MDS has five regions, four in the U.S. and one in Canada. Each region has a volunteer board chair and officers. For larger and long-term disaster response the MDS binational office coordinates with the regions and units to send additional operational support and volunteers. The first line of disaster response is at the local or “Unit” level depending on the size of the disaster. Units are comprised of volunteers within congregations located in a specific geographic area, often within state or provincial lines. If the need is greater than a unit’s resources and capacity, the “Region” responds as well.
