West Virginia – Weekly Report – March 29-April 2, 2021

April 9, 2021

Dave and Patti Hughes from Ohio continued as Project Director and Office Manager this week. It was the last week for Kurt Melby as our equipment operator and Georgann Melby as cook. They will be returning to their home in Oklahoma.

We welcomed a group of seven men from the Ephrata, Pennsylvania area as our weekly volunteers. It was a short week due to the Good Friday holiday, but we made great progress on the bridge for Lawrence Sloan. On Monday and Tuesday, the back wall forms were removed and the decking was fastened on with the required clips and nailed together. Grading was completed and we ended up replacing a driveway culvert on the property. On Thursday, a few volunteers returned to spread grass seed and straw, completing this bridge.

On Wednesday, the crew did some preliminary work of measuring and laying out a bridge at the property of Harley Kessel. This family’s bridge was washed away, and they are accessing their property from a neighbor’s driveway. We hope to return at a later date to resume work here.

Thursday was mostly spent cleaning our building and vehicles so they are ready for next week. Some rebar was cut and bent here in the parking lot in preparation for the next bridge. We are staying at a former church building which is own by the United Methodist Church in Clendenin. We have plenty of bunks in two large rooms, a couple of showers, a dining room/office area, and a nice kitchen. It is certainly sufficient for our needs and we are grateful to be here.
