WV Bridges – Weekly Report – Nov 19-23, 2018

November 29, 2018

We had a different sort of week this week. We were split between two locations, as the short term volunteers stayed at the Sleep Inn in Moundsville and the long term leadership volunteers stayed at the nearby Bed and Breakfast. Since we were staying in two locations, with neither place having a kitchen to make food, we ended up eating out for every lunch and supper, as continental breakfasts were provided by both places. Our leadership team this week included Don and Rachel Horst from Newton, Kansas who are our Project Director and Assistant Cook, Georgann and Kurt Melby from Tulsa, Oklahoma who are our Cook and Track-Hoe Operator, and Dan Driediger our Office Manager from Missinipe, Saskatchewan. Six of our short term volunteers came from southern Ontario, and Terry, who had volunteered with us two weeks prior, came from Delta, Pennsylvania.

Monday was a slower day for us as we cleaned up the site and prepared for the week ahead. On Tuesday, Roger spent the day welding the other cross braces in place; we built concrete forms for the end walls, poured one of the end walls, and began filling the gabion baskets with rip-rap. On Wednesday, the decking of the bridge began! We also poured the other concrete end wall and began building the ramps for either side of the bridge. On Thursday we continued the decking, and we were able to take the forms off the end walls. Thursday also happened to be Thanksgiving, which offered us a different set of challenges as the vast majority of the restaurants in the area were closed. We ended up eating both lunch and supper at The Huddle House. Friday brought sunny and warm weather; it was our first day in a long while that we saw the sun. We managed to finish the Little Grave Creek Bridge, sign off the job card, and have a very simple bridge dedication. The Canadian crew left mid afternoon and Terry stayed to help the long term volunteers clean up the site for moving day on Saturday.

On Saturday with everything packed, the five of us left the Moundsville area with five vehicles pulling four trailers back to Clendenin. Saturday evening, Georgann and Rachel unpacked the kitchen, Dan unloaded the trailer, and Kurt and Don went to check out the jobsite for the upcoming week of bridge building.
