Victoria County, TX – Weekly Report – Mar 4-8, 2019

March 13, 2019

This week our site has a different look as our long term team has changed!  Yearlong volunteers Raven and Cole, who had been with us since the first of the year, have moved on to other sites.  We miss them here and want to say “thanks” for the contribution they made to the MDS team and the Bloomington/Placedo communities.  We wish them the best as they move ahead in their MDS year!  Also, Wes, Ashley and boys headed back home to Manitoba on Saturday.  We thank Wes for his leadership as a crew leader for the month of February, and certainly enjoyed having his family here too!  Dwight has returned after a month at home and will continue on here for six weeks.  We were joined too by Steve and Christa, who will also be here for six weeks.  Our weekly volunteers this week consists of seven young ladies from Ontario, a Toronto resident who will be with us two weeks, and ten volunteers from Pennsylvania.

On Friday, March 1, we were very excited to finally have a home dedication for Jose and Maria Maravilla and family.  We waited two weeks for a water inspection and everyone was happy when that finally got completed!  The Maravilla home was repaired and a small addition built onto the home.  Jose, Maria, their three children, and Maria’s mother were anxiously awaiting moving into this “new” home!  The dedication was a beautiful time of sharing with others the blessing that this new home will be for this family who have not lived in their home since the hurricane in 2017.  They happily moved into their home this week!

As the work continues at Rosa’s house, the soffit was installed, the exterior door was hung and by Wednesday the sheetrock was finished being put up.  Insulation was also blown in. Volunteers were back working at Raul’s, getting the walls painted and laying laminate flooring.

Petra’s house continues with finishing the rim boards, building interior and exterior walls, nailing strapping and putting up rafters.  By Friday, sheeting was on the roof. Insulation was blown in at Rebecca’s, the flooring was started and cabinets installed. Dominga’s house was cleaned and touched up in preparation for her home dedication which will hopefully be next week. At Minnie’s, rim boards were put in place, and the floor joist and subfloor were laid.

Homeowners Calvin and Darlene Davis joined us for an evening meal and shared with us their story of surviving the hurricane. Thanks to all of our volunteers, the work continues!   Many hands can accomplish so much!
