Victoria County, TX – Weekly Report – Jan 7-11, 2019
January 17, 2019
Christmas break is over and MDS is back to work in Victoria County! We are glad to have a large group of 14 long term volunteers. Our team arrived from Ohio, Canada, PA and VA. Of these, a family of six and two young people are committed to serve with MDS for a year. We are grateful for all of them and look forward to these weeks/months together.
Sunday evening our 11 short term volunteers arrived from PA. Ten young women and their driver are enjoying the warm weather in the 70’s, away from the cold and snow of PA! They are always up and ready for the day early! We are enjoying their singing devotions every morning, their hard work, and the games and laughter in the evenings!
We are continuing work on several homes. At Maria Maravilla’s house, the volunteers are busy insulating, hanging drywall and beginning the taping and mudding process. And there’s more of the same going on at Dominga Hernandez’s house.
The inside of the house of Raul Ramirez will be treated for mold since it is now completely gutted. Work was done on the exterior and hardie siding is being painted. The bathroom walls are gone and a new bathroom will be installed.
On Thursday evening, Lupe and Roxy and family shared our meal with us, and the group was touched by Roxy’s story of the hurricane and how it has changed their lives – but for the better! She says “out of the bad comes good!”
The volunteers enjoyed the warm, sunny Texas weather as they worked together and built relationships with each other and the homeowners.
