Victoria County, TX – Weekly Report – Jan 27-Feb 1, 2019
February 12, 2019
Our team of weekly volunteers this week is made up of many different parts of the country. A family of four from Ohio stayed on for another week, seven young ladies drove the many miles from Ontario, Canada, and two individuals are from Manitoba, Canada. A group of four is having a little family reunion and met up and joined us from Indiana, North Dakota, Virginia and Nebraska. How nice to have so many areas represented as we all serve together! On Friday, we said goodbye to Dwight, a long term volunteer who has been with us this month. He was crew leader at Maria’s house and brought it almost to completion. We appreciate all his leadership and work!
The week began at Maria’s house, finishing painting the interior walls and preparing the floors for laminate. All the doors and trim for the interior were painted and installed. The floor was all finished by Thursday and cabinets were then installed on Thursday and Friday.
The drywall and mudding continued at Dominga’s home, with the final mudding finished on Wednesday. The exterior painting was finished and the skirting was put up. Sand was leveled around the house and interior doors were painted. On Friday all ceilings were textured and one coat was painted on the walls.
The porch was framed at Rebecca’s and the roof was shingled. Volunteers hung insulation and the windows were installed. The roof, deck, fascia and soffit were completed.
Window trim and the exterior were painted at Raul’s, and the bathroom was dry walled.
At Rosa’s the volunteers started framing on Thursday, working on rimboards and the floor joists. The hangers were nailed in and blocking was done.
We had enough rain this week to make the sites very muddy. Volunteers were in mud to their ankles on some sites but they kept in good spirits and continued the work!
We were glad to have Ernest join us on Wednesday evening for our meal. MDS built Ernest a new home last year and he is so grateful. He shared his hurricane story with us, as he had weathered the storm in his home. On Thursday evening County Commissioner Danny Garcia and his wife joined us for our evening meal. He works closely with MDS here and has an amazing story of how he and MDS representatives met up right after the storm when Danny and others in Victoria felt totally helpless, wondering where to start! Danny will be attending the All Unit Meeting this weekend to share with the attendees.
Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, both leadership and weekly, we once again had a very productive week, even with the rain and mud and will soon have at least one of our clients and her family back in their home!
