Victoria County, TX – Weekly Report – Jan 21-25, 2019

January 30, 2019

On Sunday we welcomed new volunteers who left the snowy north to join in our work here.  Twelve travelled down from northwest Ohio, and four from Indiana.  We appreciate the skills and energy they bring!

At Maria Maravilla’s house you’ll find the volunteers sanding, mudding, sanding, mudding, sanding, mudding….!  The exterior continues getting the nice blue color applied.  By mid-week the interior walls were primed and all the interior walls were being painted a dark purple.

The hardie siding is finished at Dominga Hernandez’s, and volunteers are getting it caulked and ready for paint.  The mudding and sanding continues inside the house, and the corner posts are in for the decking.  By Thursday and Friday volunteers were painting the trim around windows and the porch and also the hardie siding.

The new build of Rebecca Chacon’s is coming right along.  On Monday the framing of the walls was begun and continued on Tuesday.  Interior walls were framed and sheeting was started.  On Thursday the trusses went up and on Friday the roof was sheeted and papered.  Windows and doors were also installed.  At this stage, things go so quickly and the house looks different every day!

On Monday evening we enjoyed having Maria Maravilla, her three children, and her mother join us for our evening meal.  Several of the volunteers got to practice their Spanish as Maria’s mother spoke little English.  We enjoyed having the children here also.  Maria, her husband, children and mother are living in a very small two room rental since the hurricane, so you can imagine that they are quite excited for their house to be finished!  Later in the week, they brought us a meal of brisket, sausage, chicken, rice and beans. Delicious!  On Wednesday evening, Tessey, who helps with the casework, came for the evening meal and shared some thoughts with us.

At Raul Ramirez, several volunteers painted exterior trim and the porch.

The folks here in Bloomington and Placedo are so generous!   They just keep showing up with meals and fresh grapefruit from their trees!  We enjoy it all!!  One of the men who received a new home built by MDS brought over 6 dozen donuts for us this week, which were thoroughly enjoyed by the volunteers!

Our weather was quite changeable this week, with warm temperatures one day and sleet the next!  We had several mornings just above freezing, but by the end of the week we enjoyed sunny skies and nice warm temperatures – just perfect for working!
