Utuado, PR – Weekly Report – Mar 18-22, 2019

March 28, 2019

This was a week in transition here in Utuado, with transitions between Program Directors and also the first phase of a transition from large concrete building projects to smaller projects focused on roof replacements. Nelson Weber left the Project Director position and Jerry and Ethel Shank took his place.

No new volunteers were assigned here this week to give time for visiting new projects and preparing for these transitions. MDS Utuado has teamed with Reache, a program of UMCORE and the Methodist Church. Reache will do the case management (finding projects and determining qualifications), prepare the necessary documentation work for funding, and provide some engineering services for more substantial projects.

Another transition was a move from having the financial accounting work done by a designated person outside of MDS to having it done as part of the Project Director job description. Ethel Shank has picked up this task as part of her assigned duties here. Ethel has also taken on the task of supervising the food preparation and the opening and furnishing of a new volunteer living facility which is now based in Utuado. This new location will permit easier access to a wider range of projects.

Five volunteers arrived March 23rd and are prepared to focus their energies on completing the last of the church and two concrete houses in Vivi Arriba.
