Ukiah, CA – Weekly Report – Feb 3-7, 2020
February 12, 2020
New faces appeared with the beginning of another month. Mitch (crew leader) from Ohio, and Walter and Lorraine (head cook and assistant cook) from British Columbia/Alberta arrived to complete our long-term team for February.
Our weekly volunteers were comprised of a crew of ten energetic young men from Wisconsin; two young men who drove all the way from Ontario, along with two couples from southern Alberta.
This week brought sunny, warm days after a month of basically non-stop rain. We were blessed!
Much work was completed this week with cabinets, countertop, vanities and baseboards being installed in Ed Norton’s house. The trim and the interior doors were painted.
John O’Neal’s house was taped, the finish coat of mud was applied, exterior painting was completed, and the main sewer line connected to the septic tank.
At Sylver Anderson’s house the crew completed the plumbing and framing inspection deficiencies, finished the exterior painting, and boarded the entire house after insulating the floor and interior walls.
We let Gayle Zepeda’s house rest until Friday when we were able to make some progress on touch-up painting and exterior porch posts.
On Thursday, an older gentleman who lives close to the O’Neal house stopped by the house and spoke with the crew leader, Al. He had volunteered with MDS fifty years ago after Hurricane Camille wreaked havoc in Nelson County, Virginia. Seeing the MDS sign as he drove by, he decided to stop and reconnect as an MDS Alumnus.
Al and Doris, volunteers from Canada, are cowboy poets and musicians. They blessed us with a concert on Wednesday evening in the church sanctuary.
Walter and Lorraine treated us to fabulous meals every day!!
That ‘bout wraps up week one of February in Ukiah, CA.
