Rio Grande, TX RV – Weekly Report – Jan 6-10, 2020

January 14, 2020

Everyone arrived in a timely fashion the weekend of January 3rd, from far and wide, and set up their homes away from homes at the Country Sunshine RV Park in Weslaco, TX.  Beautiful, warm weather prevailed most of the week, and everyone was excited to get to our job site in Mercedes, to tear down an existing home of Miss Angelica.  It took our awesome crew just two days to tear down walls and pull the house down. They cut up the roof and sides to make them more manageable to throw into a dump wagon to be hauled off, but it sure was nice to see the Bobcat arrive to help load it!  The materials and loader are provided by the United Methodist Disaster Recovery group.

After the house was down and nails pulled from numerous 2x4s to save for a future shed, the new house started with building, leveling, and squaring cement blocks for the foundation.  There will be no basement or slab to put the house on, but it will be built on top of the blocks and anchored down. It is being built quite a bit higher than the old house to prevent future flooding.  The neighborhood was severely flooded and there are other teams from other agencies working to rebuild the neighborhood. We have seen so much need in this area. But we need to remain focused and work on building a nice new home that can be enjoyed for years to come.

During the course of the week, one volunteer was ill for a few days, another was down for one day, and at the end of the week we said “See ya later” to one who left to babysit for a bit, but she will return.  The Lord provides and He will see that we get much done!  By the end of the work day Thursday, the floor was glued and nailed on our floor joists!

With many blessings,

Fred, Ken, Rita, Lee, Kathy, Stanley, Todd, Bonnie, Lynn, and Darlene
