Pine Ridge, South Dakota, Weekly Report, Oct 8-12, 2018
October 16, 2018
On October 3, 2018 the site was reopened by our project director Jay Finkbiner from Pennsylvania, arriving along with crew leader Michael Loss from Iowa. Dave and Jane Slabaugh, crew leaders from Alabama, arrived on October 4th. Helmut and Karen Hein, our cooks from British Columbia, Canada, arrived on October 5 along with Gary Zehr, office manager, from New York. On October 8, Fred Hershey, a crew leader from Alabama, arrived. Thirteen young horse and buggy Mennonites from Kentucky arrived late evening on Sunday, October 7.
We accomplished much this week with thirteen short term volunteers and eight long term volunteers.
David Slabaugh’s crew worked at Ray’s house hanging and trimming doors and bi-fold, setting the sink and commode in the bathroom, and built the ladder to the storm shelter. They trimmed the attic opening, installed closet shelving and rods in the bedrooms, and primed window casings and shelves. They also started plumbing the sink in the kitchen and bathroom and started on the exterior porch deck and steps.
Michael Loss’s crew worked on Gaylne’s house hanging and trimming doors and bi-folds, as well as trimming through the house. They installed baseboard heaters and outlets, installed the exterior light, and installed the kitchen cabinets and sink. They also installed the wall mount handicap sink in bathroom and installed closet shelves in the bedroom and bathroom.
At Kerry’s house, Michael and crew installed the kitchen countertop, sink and plumbing. They also installed closet shelving in the bedrooms and bathroom, installed the window trim, painted, and installed the hot water heater.
At John’s house Fred and crew worked on plumbing and installed and painted closet shelving.
At Susan’s house Michael and crew worked on plumbing.
Fred Hershey worked on Kerry’s house installing the countertop in the kitchen. He also installed trim and shelving in the bedroom and bathroom.
At Susan’s house Fred and crew installed exterior window trim and worked on plumbing.
At John’s house Fred and crew worked on plumbing, and installed fixtures and electrical outlets throughout the house.
We had the long term recovery team leader, Maretta, provide us with a briefing on the selection process of individual people receiving assistance for disaster relief. We have enjoyed the singing of our young men from Kentucky. We have been so blessed to have them as volunteers. We also need to express our delight about the great food that our two cooks have provided us.
We are looking forward to three new groups coming in next week and we are hopeful that the weather will provide warm and dry days so we can meet our goal of having six homes ready for our clients. Please keep the work at Pine Ridge in your prayers.
