Pine Ridge, SD – Weekly Report – Oct 28-Nov 1, 2019

November 5, 2019

We have seen huge changes at Pine Ridge this week.  Everyone concentrated efforts on the former dining room – soon to become Mr. Donald’s home.  Gene (Valley Center KS), Construction Supervisor, and Ed (Hesston KS), Crew Leader, did the pre-planning and worked alongside the short-term volunteers.  Dale (Saskatoon SK) and Dennis (Myerstown PA) have been here for two weeks and were joined by Audrey (Denholm SK) and Angela (Calgary AB) for this week.   On Monday morning, Dale and Audrey started by building and erecting the interior walls, followed by hanging drywall.  Dennis and Angela began mudding, taping and sanding existing drywall.  Ed and Gene relocated electrical boxes and wiring.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, Audrey and Angela began painting and the guys continued on drywall.  The shower, bathroom light and vent and the vent piping were installed.  Dave (Stuarts Draft VA), aka “the cook”, used his electrical knowledge and worked on the electrical panel and installed ceiling lights.   By Friday, everyone was excited to see the progress made during this week.  Kitchen cabinets were installed and our energetic, young, volunteers from Canada, insisted on returning to the jobsite after supper and games to put the second coat of paint on the bedroom walls.  On Saturday morning, Dale, Audrey and Angela left to return to their homes – they contributed MUCH to our work site, and we thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed their energy and enthusiasm in our social circle.

Lois (Bloomington IL), project director spent a good amount of her week making runs for materials and Ruth (Hesston KS), Office Manager, began packing up the supply and linen closets in preparation for the final move out of Pine Ridge which is planned for November 16.  She also worked on end-of-the-month bookkeeping and on Friday afternoon turned the reins of Office Manager over to Wayne (Bloomington IL).  Wayne continued to fill propane tanks on a daily basis – temps were in the single digits most of the nights this week.

Our cooks, Dave and Brenda (Stuarts Draft VA) left on Saturday morning after spending four weeks with us.  With the changes in our dining rooms and the inconveniences that brought, they have continued to provide delicious hot meals – all with a smile.  Thank you for your contributions to our project.

Long-Term Volunteers – Lois, Gene, Wayne, Ruth, Ed, Dave, and Brenda
