Pine Ridge, SD – Weekly Report – Oct 14-18, 2019
November 1, 2019
What a great week – no snow, beautiful weather, a variety of jobs and a happy, hard-working group of volunteers.
Everyone worked all week at the Volunteer Center. The electrical inspection was completed so work began on the insulation and drywall. Marilyn and Loretta (Goshen IN) and Anna (Nashwauk WI) made up the insulation crew. According to the evening reports, they were outstanding as a team. They were able to stay far ahead of the drywall crew, and reported that they even “had fun”. Les (Goshen IN) assisted the insulation crew by putting foam around the doors and windows. On Thursday, when the weather was warm, the group painted outside door trim.
The drywall crew varied in numbers throughout the week, but consisted mainly of Leroy and John (brothers from Goshen IN), Jack (Nashwauk WI) and Brian (Marshfield WI). Gerry (Niverville MB) continued to work on installing the bathroom vents and when he finished that job, worked with the drywall crew.
Working under the direction of Frank Murdock Electric, Dale, Bonnie and Curtis (all from Goshen IN) installed wiring for lighting and receptacles. Once again, Rollie (Syracuse IN), Fred (Huntsville AL) and Ed (Hesston KS) gave excellent leadership and direction for the crews. Unfortunately, Rollie had to spend considerable time (three different days) driving to Rapid City for supplies. The cooks, Dave and Brenda (Stuarts Draft VA) continue to receive high marks for their excellent meals.
The Volunteer Center certainly doesn’t look the same on Friday evening as it did on Monday morning when this group arrived. The insulation in the residential side is approximately 90% complete and the residential drywall is approximately 60% complete. We said goodby to Gerry who has been with us for three weeks and has been a tremendous asset to the work and to our social life. We also, said goodby to the weekly volunteers – we appreciate all their good work and great spirits.
Long-Term Volunteers – Rollin, Fred, Ruth, Ed, Dave, and Brenda
