Pine Ridge, S.D., Weekly Report, July 2-6, 2018
July 12, 2018
This past week we had a youth group from Zion Mennonite church in Archbold, Ohio come and serve with us in Pine Ridge. We accomplished a lot with this group, from hanging doors and working on the porch at Molly’s to insulating at Susan’s and John’s houses, framing at Gaylne’s, painting at Ray’s, and laying the flooring and putting on the doors at Lynette’s house.
We had the opportunity to accompany the group from Zion Mennonite to the Wounded Knee memorial, where we learned about a significant battle from the history of this reservation, and were able to ask questions of some of the native Lakota people about how this event has continued to impact them today.
In addition to working hard and visiting the memorial site, we enjoyed the many Fourth of July fireworks that were put on all around Pine Ridge! From our base alone we could see light displays for miles in every direction.
This week, we have a group of teachers serving with us from Woodbury, Pennsylvania, and we are looking forward to getting to know them better!
