Pine Ridge, S.D., Weekly Report, July 9-13, 2018
July 19, 2018
This past week in Pine Ridge we had a smaller group of Old Order Mennonites from Pennsylvania come work with us. At Molly’s house, they worked on painting and installing baseboards, electrical and insulation, and on the kitchen. They insulated at John and Kerry’s homes. At the Gaylne’s, they worked on siding, framing, and on the roof and soffits. They also insulated the crawl space and installed cabinets and vanities at Lynette’s house.
On Wednesday, the group finished working early so they could visit the Wounded Knee memorial site and learn more about the history of Pine Ridge and the people of the land. That evening, we also got to hear from Maretta Champagne, who shared more information about the Oglala Lakota people, their culture, the difficulties they face, and what it is like to live here on the reservation. This week, we welcomed a group from Manitoba who is here to serve with us. We are looking forward to working with our Canadian friends!
