Paradise, CA – Weekly Report – June 7-11, 2021

June 22, 2021

The Paradise MDS project is again open and running. After closing for several weeks to allow more time for building permits and other work, this project is again a vibrant operation.

Project Director Robert Unrau, from Boise, ID, returned and oriented the other long-term volunteers who arrived. Joining him are Office Manager, Wayne Hochstetler, Bloomington, IL, and Lois Hochstetler, Assistant Cook. Head Cook is Carolyn (Carol) Brubaker along with Leon Brubaker, Crew Leader, both from Akron, PA. Herb Hoover, Leola, PA, is serving as the other Crew Leader. Joining this fine team of leaders are two Hesston College Disaster Management Program students, Carson Orpin, Canton, KS, and Kaytlen Keough, Albany, OR. During the week Paul Jutzi, Mohnton, PA. This very capable team lead our 5 weekly volunteers, who joined us from Albany, OR; Sterling, IL; Eagle, ID; and Manheim, PA.

Building permits were granted for several houses, so this week we began 3 houses, all new re-builds, on our job numbers 3, 4, and 9, located in the Butte County area east of Paradise. The other house is located on the other side of Paradise, toward Chico. Footers were dug, forms constructed for foundations and the slab, under-slab plumbing began, and the base for the slab built up.

Next week we anticipate that the under-slab work will be completed, and that inspections will be able to take place.

Many of the trees around our volunteer housing units were cut down the day before most of us arrived, so we are living with the tangle of downed trees, which will be cut up and hauled away soon, we are told. Some were burned, and some were diseased. This is part of the unfortunate legacy of a fire such as this.

We are glad to be in Paradise serving with MDS. Thanks for your interest by reading this report.

Wayne Hochstetler, Office Manager, on behalf of the Paradise Team.
