Mt. Vernon, AL – Weekly Report – May 24-28, 2021
June 16, 2021
Early in the morning of May 24 a group of 14 young ladies, plus their driver, arrived from New Holland, Pennsylvania After a few hours of sleep they were ready to get started. Mike Dillaber, project director, got two groups going in removing the existing shingles on the first property and second property. Throughout the week the ladies removed all of the shingles, put them in dumpsters, and laid down peel-and-stick underlayment on both houses. They then started putting down new shingles and by the end of the week had completed one house and approximately ½ of the other house. Mike Dillaber, Ben Dillaber, and Roland Stutzman finished up the roofs in subsequent weeks.
Highlights of the week were when Mike and Ben caught a rat snake and some of the volunteers became snake handlers. The group went out to eat for the Friday evening meal at a seafood restaurant and experienced eating raw oysters and gator bits.
And finally on Saturday morning the group spent several hours on the beach at Dauphin Island before beginning their trip back to Pennsylvania.
There are no plans for the upcoming weeks as no weekly volunteers are scheduled. If there is a group interested in volunteering this summer please contact Roland Stutzman. Email firstname.lastname@example.org or (205) 855-9880.
