Meridian, MS – Weekly Report – Jan 7-11, 2019
January 15, 2019
It was our first week here in Meridian last week and we were blessed with sunny calm days, beautiful for working. Our crew of seven long term volunteers was joined by a couple from Canada, eight energetic young women and one couple from Pennsylvania, as well as another couple from Ohio.
One crew continued work on the home of Flora Clayton that had been started by the Amish group before we got here. They had done the rebuild of the roof, and we got right to work and put on the steel roofing as well as soffit, fascia, and gable ends. There was more gutting done inside the house, and the carport ceiling was repaired and painted. We also put up siding on the top part of the walls and put the primer on it, as well as painted the soffit and fascia. Ms. Flora came by one day and was very happy to see the work done so well and the progress made.
The second home we worked on this week was that of Dorothy Davis. There was lots of activity there as the crew taped and mudded, cleaned and painted, pulled up carpets and put down laminate flooring. Outside there was some electrical repair as well as repair to the soffit and eaves of the house. The homeowner was a little overwhelmed by all the activity but was sad to see her new friends leave at the end of the week.
Our Project Director got some new jobs signed on and so we will be able to keep our volunteers working for the next weeks. Our new cooks did a great job of feeding everyone and the crew leaders kept the work moving forward, in spite of coffee and ice cream runs. Evenings were lively with conversation and games and by the end of the week we were all tired but still sorry to have to say goodbye to the new friends we had made.
