Lake County, California, Weekly Report, Oct 22-26, 2018

October 30, 2018

This week we were joined by fourteen framing volunteers from Indiana, two volunteers from Southern California and our head cook from Ohio.

Monday morning the framing crew hit the road to travel to Redwood Valley, California to begin Mr. Paul’s home.  The foundations were ready for framing.  It was such a productive week.  Crew leader David and this group of young men brought the house from the foundation to siding and shingled roof in just four days.  This also included all of the interior walls and exterior windows and doors.  Other of our group also assisted in the work there on Wednesday.  Our framing crew was only able to be with us for four days, leaving camp in the wee hours of Friday morning.  After a hearty breakfast on Friday morning, our two crew leaders and Madi headed back up to Redwood Valley to complete the siding on Mr. Paul’s house.

Our volunteers with crew leader Jan, were able to completely finish the mudding and sanding on Ms. Jocelyn’s home on Monday and Tuesday.  It is now ready for texturing and painting, which will be scheduled at a later date.  Jan’s crew also provided assistance at the MDS unit site by sanding and painting the door of the fire case worker’s office and installing security cameras for our hosting church.

We were delighted to participate in the house dedication Thursday for our clients, the Guzmans, whose house was worked on last season.  Crew leader Jan was invited to share with the Guzmans and it was a memorable home welcoming for the Guzmans.  Our partnership with Hope Crisis Relief Network, Inc made it possible for the Guzmans to replace their home that was lost in the forest fire of 2015.

We’ve all enjoyed delicious meals this week provided by cooks Tim and Pauline.  Hearty appetites were easily filled with a wonderful variety of meals.

This week we say goodbye to Madi, our three week volunteer, who will be traveling on to visit family here in the west.  We wish her well as she continues to volunteer with MDS.  Her plans are to serve with MDS this year during her gap year between high school and her first semester at EMU.  We were happy to be her first MDS site.

Blessings from the long term volunteers:  Robert & Sally, Jan, David, Tim, Pauline
