Greenbrier County, WV – Weekly Report – Jan 6-10, 2020

January 15, 2020

Since the Greenbrier Co. project is just opening again here in Lewisburg after being closed down over a year ago, several long term volunteers arrived early to get the accommodations ready, build some temporary walls for rooms, and get everything prepared for our first group of short term volunteers arriving Jan. 5, as well as making sure everything was ready to begin work on the sites.  The community, along with Rhema Christian Center, is so glad to have MDS back again and has welcomed us with open arms!

Our long term team includes our cooks, Char Roth and Rebekah Short, our crew leaders Ron Roth, Bill Metchulat, and Jonathan Short, two year long MDS volunteers, Uriah Sauder and Katrina Burkholder, and Mike and Linda Stuckey, as Project Director and Office Manager.  We’re looking forward to serving together as a team.  On Sunday we welcomed Terry from PA, Sheryl from PA, and nine young women from Missouri.

We began the week working at two sites where foundations had been laid before we arrived.  These sites are both in Caldwell.  On Monday and Tuesday at Lucy Morrison’s the crews put in floor joists and blocking and installed sill plates and rim boards.  Both homes are basically just starting so the same work was done at Annabelle Gabbert’s.  By Friday, subfloors were finished, exterior walls were up, and porch footers were poured, along with some sheeting being up at Annabelle Gabbert’s.

On Thursday evening, Kathy from WVVoad joined us for our meal and shared with us information about Voad and stories of the flood.  She thanked us many times for being here – they so appreciate our work and our volunteers!

Our first week went very well and the work progressed quickly, despite the mud!  Thank you to our wonderful volunteers!
