Greenbrier County, WV – Weekly Report – Jan 13-17, 2020

January 22, 2020

On Sunday evening we were glad to welcome a group of 11 men and women from Dayton, VA, for the week, as well as our son, daughter-in-law and their three children from Ohio.  Of course, it’s especially fun to have grandkids joining us this week!  The upstairs of the Rhema Center is housing 54 Habitat volunteers this week, young men from Dickinson College in PA.  About 20 of them will be working with us each day this week!

We are still dealing with mud on some of the worksites, but the work continues nonetheless!  With the larger crews, a lot got accomplished!  On Monday, the trusses went up on the Gabbart and Morrison homes, along with roof sheeting and porch posts. The crews found the Habitat volunteers to be great help and good workers.  Bill took a crew to nearby Alderson, to the home of Kathryn Kensinger, where they started building up from the foundation.

By Tuesday afternoon, flooring was finished, door and window frames were built and one side wall was standing at the Kensinger house.  At the Morrison home, trusses were up and sheeting was done, as well as the house wrap finished.  At the Gabbert home, porch posts were finished, roof was sheeted and papered, and some wall sheeting was done.  Interior walls were begun on Wed. on that house.  Sheeting, housewrap and windows were done by Wednesday on the Morrison home and shingles were started as well.  By the end of the day on Wednesday at the Kensinger house, 3 walls were standing and interior walls were laid out.  Cement was mixed for porch columns.

Our two grandsons, ages 10 & 7, have enjoyed going out to the sites with their parents and also “helping” out at the base each day.  Working with the Habitat volunteers was great – we especially needed their muscles this week as they handed the trusses up on the homes.  They were here at just the right time!

By Friday afternoon, at Ms. Gabbert’s home, shingles were going on, interior walls were up and windows and doors were going in.  Triple plates were installed on interior walls at Ms. Morrison’s and at Ms. Kensinger’s framing was completed.
