Fort Myers, FL – Weekly Report – Mar 4-8, 2019
March 13, 2019
Rollin Ulrich from Syracuse, IN arrived a few days early to cross over from Phil. This is the first time as Project Director for Rollin.
Lois Wenger, head cook, arrived on Friday. She went right to work with shopping and cooking on Saturday and did the airport run for three flights. The first flight was delayed, the second flight was early, and the third flight was late. We got in at midnight and Lois had caught a cold so she put in a long day and the rest of us were weary from the travel.
There are three couples serving as project leadership: John (crew leader) & Linda Sawatzky (office manager), Bill and Marie (assistant cook) Giesbrecht from Salmon Arm, BC, Chuck and Ginny Gibson (crew leader) from Iron Mt., MI. Additionally, Henry Schellenberg is from Red Deer, AB, acting as Construction supervisor.
On Sunday night the weekly volunteers arrived: 6 EMU students serving during their spring break, Michael & Barb Schauren from PA, and Guy Vlastis from VA. We had orientation that evening and the next day the team was ready to head to the sites.
We are working primarily on 3 houses: Coe, Rivera and Martinez. The Coe house is being trimmed. The Rivera house is being sheeted, taped and mudded. The Martinez house was finished framing and the roof, outside walls and wall strength were inspected. There are a lot of inspections in Florida counties.
Larry Stoner was on site on Monday afternoon till Wednesday and Kevin King paid a visit and assisted us Thursday late morning until Friday morning, which was a great encouragement and support for Rollie.
The team is getting along well and having some good laughs as we learn to work together. By Wednesday evening the EMU students were talking and laughing around the tables and playing games.
The weather turned cold on us two mornings at 45 degrees. It’s warming up though for the weekend. It was a great first week!
On behalf of Rollie and team, Linda Sawatzky, Office Manager
