Fort Myers, FL – Weekly Report – Feb 4-8, 2019

Happiness is seeing friends from your home church in Michigan arrive to help in LaBelle, Florida! One “old” (sorry, Tom Nickel) friend came from Minnesota, and Abe Rissler brought eight new friends from Pennsylvania!
We are continuing work on the home of Deborah Coe, our first new build. Insulation baffles were tucked into the corners of the attic space and the walls were insulated. Drywall board was put up, and tape and our “Queen Mudder” Barbara informed us that mud was applied by the Michigan and Pennsylvania volunteers. Also, all the windows were foamed.
Hank Gerbrandt and his crew from Pennsylvania were able to move right along on Maria Garcia’s home. When they finished the shingling job here, they trucked on over to Christina Carrillo’s home to continue the shingling process that was begun last week.
Deborah Franks was happy that Layne Newswanger arrived Monday morning with his crew of five de-shingling experts. Aluminum flashing was put in some places and next week, shingles will be nailed down. There were critters living under her house that were shooed out, so the crew fixed the skirting to prevent them from getting back in.
A new job was signed up with homeowner Fidel Alviar, Jr. The roof was stripped, which was a difficult job since the tarp had melted into the shingles. Rotten trusses were repaired, 20 sheets of plywood replaced and new fascia boards installed. The team also tore down a small lean-to. And if that wasn’t enough for a week’s worth of busyness, a new porch roof was started AND new drip edge and ice and water shield was nailed into place. We are ready for shingles, so an inspection was requested. We will move on when our work is approved.
Bob Nakamura kept the houses, and even the dining hall, all neat and swept up. Thank you, Bob!!
Some of January’s long term volunteers left and a new bunch arrived to take their place.
Overheard at the Water Department: “Those Mennonites do great work!” Thank you, volunteers!
To HIM be the glory!!
