Coastal Bend, TX – Weekly Report – Mar 9-13, 2020
April 1, 2020
By the time you’re reading this, most of you will know that MDS has made the decision to close all MDS project sites as of March 13 for an indefinite period.
I want to share with you what I see as the heart of MDS after this announcement was made at the Coastal Bend, TX site. Immediately crew leaders and the short-term volunteers expressed concerns about not wanting to leave the houses they were working on unfinished. Comments were made such as “can we at least finish the roof before we leave?” and “our group is willing to stay longer to finish our project.” The love and concern for the homeowner and getting them into an improved living situation is unparalleled to anything I’ve seen.
I’ll now move on to what I had planned to write in the weekly report before receiving news of the site closing:
We began this week with two new persons joining the long-term volunteers. Dave King, a crew leader from PA and Uriah Sauder, a yearlong MDS volunteer; both are a wonderful addition to our group.
This week also brought us a youth group of hard-working Amish young men and their youth leaders from PA as well as a yearly volunteer from Canada. Their skills and work ethic were appreciated by all.
The crew at the Bailey Street house installed exterior doors, completed the siding and interior framing. And Ms. Jessie’s house had shelving installed.
We had a great crew of ramp-builders this week. After completing a ramp at Mr. Gilbert’s house, they began building a ramp at Ms. Maria’s house.
Some awesome roofers are here this week because a crew went to Port Aransas one day to shingle a roof and had the job completed by noon that day!
Mr. Gilbert and Ms. Mary’s house had the final cleaning completed in the morning for dedication in the afternoon! Ms. Cynthia’s house was also dedicated the same day.
Robert Walson from Indiana arrived mid-week to take over the role of Office Manager. He received a crash-course in the role of office manager and closing down a site!
Several of us who have served over the last month (Leon, Marlene, Laverne, Bev, and Bonnie) will be leaving with very fond memories of our time in Rockport.
