Hurricane Harvey reached tropical storm status on August 17, 2017 and continued to develop and intensify, becoming a category 3 hurricane that finally dissipated on September 3, 2017. It was the costliest natural disaster ever on record in the U.S. and the first major hurricane to make landfall on U.S. soil since 2005. There were 91 confirmed deaths and more than 300,000 people were left without electricity. Many people were displaced and thousands of homes were destroyed.
Weekly volunteers will be staying in the house and former salon buildings that have been used by MDS for Hurricane Harvey response since 2018. Each building has bunkrooms and restrooms, with a shower trailer just outside for washing. Mosquitoes are prevalent here, so it’s recommended that volunteers bring insect repellant. MDS work will be focused on new construction from hurricane and flood damage in Refugio County.
