Memorial Day weekend 2016 and the days after brought heavy rains across central Texas, causing record flooding in some areas. In Bastrop, this flood event was the fifth disaster in the past year, including two floods and a fire in 2015, and an earlier flood in 2016. The area is still recovering from the earlier disasters.
Bastrop is rich in history and natural beauty. The Colorado River runs through the city, and forests cover much of the land. The current population is approximately 7,800 people. Nearly 12 percent of the population lives below the poverty line.
MDS volunteers will primarily do flood repairs in the Bastrop area, working closely with the Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team to help meet homeowner needs.
Currently, this project is an MDS RV Program project. To learn more visit the Recreational Vehicle program web page.
