Aibonito, Puerto Rico, Weekly Report, June 3-8, 2018
June 29, 2018
We welcomed five volunteers from Pennsylvania, as well as one from Iowa. Three were already bonded as a team as they had volunteered with MDS in Utuado earlier this summer. Having had such a good time there, they returned but this time, they were assigned to Aibonito. The task they were given was to put steel roofing on a roof. With a willing spirit, they fulfilled the challenge with steady hands and feet. The sound of roosters crowing was mixed with the sound of the impact driver, securing the sheets of steel. An occasional cloud covered sky helped make the tin roof bearable but most of the time the heat beat down full force. Hats off to this crew who kept working away without complaints, until the job was finished!
The home owner’s 94-year-old father was on hospice and went home to be with the Lord just hours after Faye had graciously hosted us for lunch on Wednesday. We were able to attend the memorial service for him, which meant a lot to her. We treasure the privilege of friendship with Faye and her extended family.
Since three from this team had previously worked at the Utuado site, it worked out for the entire team to spend Thursday there, laying block. They enjoyed visiting with Pastor Deborah again and seeing the progress being made at the Utuado project.
