Manitoba prepares for Red River flooding

MDS volunteers sandbag in Winnipeg.

Weather forecasts indicate that once again Manitoba communities, especially those along the Red River basin, may experience flooding due to spring run-off and current weather conditions.

In the United States, the Red River is expected to crest in Fargo this coming weekend at 37-40 feet above flood stage. Residents of Fargo, Grand Forks and other smaller communities along the Red River are already sand bagging and fortifying existing dike structures.

Local government officials in Winnipeg along with the non-government organizations (NGO) are on high alert as preparations for potential flooding in Manitoba are underway. Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) is an active member of the NGO group. This group communicates directly with government flood protection officials who coordinate the preparedness and response efforts in the province.

Flood mitigation efforts after the 1997 flood have provided relative safety for most homes and businesses in southern Manitoba. However, individuals and business owners are encouraged to take all necessary precautions. The events of the next several weeks may provide local churches opportunities to serve as disaster shelters or provide other assistance to displaced residents.

Temporary shelter may be needed for homeowners whose homes have been flooded due to local snow melt and clogged culverts, as well as homeowners displaced due to closure of community ring dikes. There may also be a need for volunteers to sandbag prior to the arrival of the river crest and to clean up damage from high water levels.

MDS and the NGO partner organizations are ready to assist local government personnel to support those in need. Direct your inquiries to volunteer the MDS office at 204-261-1274. Monetary donations are gratefully accepted and receipted by our office at 6A-1325 Markham Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba , R3T 4J6, or you may donate on-line.

Volunteer

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.

Donate

Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
