Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Weekly Report for Newton RV

The week started with Vern and Len tearing off the roof of the little house next door to Ms. Linda. The metal roof had blown loose during Hurricane Ike and the handicapped man was living with mold inside from the dampness. The family is providing funds for materials and our guys will do the work. That afternoon, they tarped the roof and weighted it down with heavy bricks against the wind and cold coming. Tuesday and Wednesday was very cold and rainy, so no roofing was done.

Tuesday, the camp sent over a young man experienced in spray painting and he painted the interior of the house. It looks so nice!

Walt and Pat made trips to Jasper for the cabinets, assisted by Alec, from the camp. Diane and Nettie sanded them. Wednesday, they began staining them a beautiful dark cherry. By Thursday, the cabinets were installed.

Phil continued with the trim around the windows, inside and out. Vern and Len installed interior doors. Walt and Len worked on electrical.

Wednesday we had a visit from our Executive Director, Kevin King. He visited our house in the afternoon and then came for supper with our group. Walt and Vern grilled steaks and we women fixed the rest. We ate in the church social hall and had a good visit with Kevin. After supper we all went out to the camp for a time of fellowship and dessert with the “regulars”. It was a farewell for them as they are all leaving by the end of the week. We will miss them as we have made lots of friends there!

Thursday morning we woke up to a dusting of snow! Ares south of here received much more, up to six inches. It warmed up and by the end of the week was in the 60s. Pat had inadvertently locked the church keys in the church Wednesday evening, so we all went over to Ms. Linda’s house for devotions, sitting on buckets. Ms. Linda stopped by and joined us in our prayer time.

Vern, Diane, Len, Nettie, Walt and Pat, worked Friday and Saturday. Friday, Pat mostly made trips back and forth to Jasper for materials and to straighten out errors (made by the supplier), so that the door installation could be finished. The camp folks brought over the dump trailer for us to use and Walt loaded all the debris on it to take to the landfill. The house was spruced up to be ready for our house dedication on Sunday afternoon.

Friday afternoon, Vern and Len finished up the roof for Mr. Art. They will paint the exposed boards if they have time; otherwise, we will suggest that the family do this. Ms. Linda and Nettie worked on painting trim.

Saturday, Diane and Pat put the first coat of finish on the cabinets and Nettie continued with painting trim. In the afternoon the final load from Lowe’s was delivered. The stove is in place and the counter tops ready to install.

It was a busy week, and we were all very tired, but it was a great week, as we see the end coming. Finishing up the house was our goal and it looks like we will make it. Stay tuned!
