This was a week of both celebration and sadness.
The work that was completed this week was just amazing!
Monday morning began with measuring and readjusting the rafters to assure that they were perfectly straight and with the ladies installing the hurricane straps.
The roof was completely sheeted by Tuesday afternoon, with Len and Pete securing the sheets that were lifted by Gerry and Andre. A certified roofer came in to do the shingling, with Andre assisting. Sherman, Ron, and Andre completed the porches, with Nettie and Georgia’s help. Working diligently, Jim, Gerry, Annette and Georgia completed installing most of the siding, with only one peak left to complete next week. LaVonne, the now professional palm-nailer, secured most of the siding. Nettie and Suzette demonstrated their expertise with the caulking gun, caulking the seams in the siding. Pete and Len are well underway with installing the soffit and fascia. Meanwhile, all the doors have been painted by Joanne, Linda and Mary Ann, and are now ready to be installed.
Joanne and Mary Ann were busy on Wednesday with a slight diversion from their regular jobs. The office trailer now is recognizable as an MDS vehicle, sporting the newly applied MDS Logo on both sides and the rear.
On Wednesday it was time to celebrate and what better way than with a Waffle Supper. Pete got out his outdoor waffle maker and made delicious, fresh, crisp waffles. Everyone pitched in by supplying farmer’s sausage, and toppings, including strawberries, peaches, blueberries, fruit cocktail, white sauce, ice cream, and whipped cream. With a feast such as that, we all decided that we wouldn’t need to eat for the rest of the week! Then when the meager leftovers were cleaned up, laughter echoed throughout the hills as we played table games until the cool evening air forced us inside.
Thursday morning, tears flowed freely as we bade farewell to Sherman and LaVonne. They have been very hard workers, and real cheerful encouragers, no matter what situations we faced. We will truly miss them, this last week at this project. We wish them God’s blessings on their journey home!

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.
Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
