Our young people from Rainbow Mennonite Church in Kansas departed for home Saturday morning after a fulfilling week of hard work. The Fulk family, including the Hartmans, returned to Florida on Friday night. Our long-term crew has been supplemented this week with the addition of Manfred Peters of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The three graduates from the Disaster Management Program at Hesston College have been quite amazing and a pleasure to work with. Jordan, Hope and Rudy have not only learned new skills in carpentry, drywall finishing and floor installation, they have learned them while managing crews of their own. We are very proud of their work with the materials for the houses but also for their work with the youth volunteers on the site each week.
Mrs. H's house is inching toward completion; this week the kitchen cabinets were installed and the trim applied throughout the house. We expect the electrician, the plumber and the HVAC technician to finish their work later next week or early the following week. Mrs. H grows more excited each day.
Jordan's crew at Mrs. C's house has finished mudding and applied the first coat of primer to the walls. Some of the ceilings are now textured and ready for paint. We have the flooring and the cabinets waiting for installation.
The house for Mr. P is also moving along quite nicely. The sheetrock is hung and most of the mud has been applied. In the next week we hope to begin the primer coat as well as the ceiling texture.
Temperatures this week have been somewhat more forgiving with highs in the low 90's - at no time did we reach up into the three digit range! What a relief!

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.
Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
