The team from Hutchinson, Kansas area arrived Monday afternoon eager to go to work. Once jobs were identified, it did not take long to place skill and ambition to the right task. Three homes were assigned to three teams.
The interior walls of the home belonging to Ms. Juanita received two coats of paint. Then, the task of installing sub-flooring and laminated flooring (snap-lock) started. This was a new experience for this ambitious team and the first few hours of learning the correct process was “educational.” But, patience and persistence proved to be a strength. Ms. Juanita visited her home while the team was working and provided food, sweets, and a lot of appreciation.
Mr. Milton’s home was busy with a committed team installing sheet rock to the walls. By the end of the week all sheet rock had been installed, taped, and mudded. Ms. Marie G. home experienced a team that took painting seriously. Once sanding was completed, the ceiling was textured, and the walls painted with primer. The ceilings and walls are now freshly painted in soft colors. Two teams came together to spend a day removing bad sheet rock from a home. Thursday night each team sang their job reports showing creativity in music, words, and providing laughter. Each evening joyful harmonized singing filled the Hayne Building. Friday night dessert was a special treat using an empty five gallon mud bucket, and a mud mixer (all sanitized). The recipe was simple: take two or three gallons of vanilla ice cream, Three or four pounds of frozen strawberries, frozen whip cream, blend, and enjoy. Shopping for groceries, and preparation of delicious meals was shared among the hard working Kansas team. “His Lord said unto him, well done, good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of the Lord.” Matthew 25:23
MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.
Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
