Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Weekly Report for Pass Christian

July 25, 2009
Category: Pass Christian, MS

We enjoyed another great work week here in Mississippi. A large group of enthusiastic young people from Niagara United Mennonite Church, Ontario, Canada, came eager to work and up to the challenge of learning new things

The end is in sight at Ms. H’s house. The plumbing, HVAC and electrical contractors have finished all but final connections. Privacy screening (a new requirement) was completed under the house.

Good progress continues at the C house. The tile flooring in bathroom and kitchen is finished. The laminate flooring was installed and walls and ceilings painted. The privacy screening was also completed.

At the P house the drywall finishing was completed. Ceilings were textured and priming was started. The bathroom, kitchen and utility floors were prepared for ceramic tile. The privacy screening at this house was also completed. The homeowner keeps us well supplied with his famous gooey butter cake.

Minor repair work for Ms. B was begun and completed. The job included insulating the underside of the house, nailing up plywood and painting. This single mother working two jobs is already enjoying the benefits of a cooler house and looks forward to lower utility bills.

A second repair job was begun for Mr. G. His house was built by other organizations and lacked a rear staircase. Since the back door is approximately 12 feet off the ground, this is a safety hazard with young children in the house. We put some big bodies to work digging holes, setting poles, and building the landings.

We completed insulating the underside of the R home. If we have enough labor, we will paint the plywood.

Long-term staff said thank you and farewell to Glenn and Esther Buck, the Project Directors, and to Catrina Schrock and Marlinda Beachy, the cooks

Volunteer

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.

Donate

Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
