As we head into our final weeks here in Newton, it only seems a short time ago we arrived. We have come to know the families in this area that has been “home” to us long-termers. We also had the blessing of getting to know several volunteers over our much loved meals. All our cooks put lots of “T.L.C” in their meals - one of the many benefits to coming to an MDS project!!
This week brought a family of six, three sons, one daughter, mom and dad from Archbold, Ohio along with a couple from Pincher Creek. Alberta. At the S house mudding was the big project and all worked together so well, much was accomplished. Mornings were accompanied by Peter on the piano priming us all up for the day! Mom usually was gathering up the great recipes from the cooks and Dad oversaw the mudding from high atop his stilts at the job site. Over at the J house Jim and Linda along with Crew Chief Dick are hard at work laying up the foundation and floors and by week’s end the walls were raised.
Tuesday, we celebrated with birthday boy, four year old Samuel, complete with balloons, party hats, decorations and ice cream cake. The dining hall filled with the delightful sounds of children having fun and playing with the presents.
Wednesday night the weather allowed us to have a campfire/cookout. The cooks came up with the idea and it was unanimously accepted by all and included the RV Newton group. With our tummies full of hot dogs, beans, chips and dessert we settled back around the fire to listen to testimonies and sing a few favorite songs.
Thursday was the American Thanksgiving. We Canadians have enjoyed two turkey dinners as our Thanksgiving was in October – you can’t have too much turkey! The dinner table was beautifully decorated with fall foliage that complimented the meal complete with pumpkin and pecan pies. Well satisfied, each of us expressed our gratitude on what we were thankful for. For some it was the food, others health, family and the blessings of God in our lives.
And then it was Friday again, and time to finish up, wash vehicles, clean and pack up another worthwhile week.

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.
Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
