Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Weekly Report for Diamond

July 10, 2009
Category: Diamond, LA

This week, we were privileged to have two groups help with rebuilding in Diamond. The first was a youth group from Silberfeld Chortitzer Mennonite Church in New Bothwell, Manitoba, and the second was a group from Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

At Mr. Ron’s house, the primary job was completing the hanging of drywall, and then the group started mudding and finishing, and towards the end of the week came the sanding. The people working on Ron’s house were welcomed by Mr. Ron daily with a big smile!

The second job was at Antonine’s house. This group finished the porch by laying the shingles, installing hardi-plank, and painting the railings.

Saturday was a very special day for MDS and people on the Bayou. We had a dedication for the five houses. There were 73 people in attendance. There were people from the Parish Government, Red Cross, MDS, Salvation Army, SMHA, the Health Department, and most importantly the homeowners of the five homes. During the celebration, each homeowner received a wall hanging, a Bible, a quilt, and “The Hammer Rings Hope” book. It was a very special day for people in the Bayou to celebrate with the homeowners as they are now able to move into their new homes!

Many thanks for all the volunteers past and present who helped bring five more families home!

Volunteer

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.

Donate

Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
