Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Weekly Report for Diamond

July 17, 2009
Category: Diamond, LA

This was another busy week of the summer youth program at the Diamond Project. We were blessed to serve with a short-term group from Kitchener, Ontario. The volunteers worked diligently through heat, rain, and some thunderstorms this week! Despite the weather, much work was accomplished.

Mr. Ron’s house was transformed from gray drywall to a beautiful rainbow of colors, from violet living room walls, blue bedrooms, and a bright green bathroom! Jackie and Andy as well as the volunteers were kept fueled daily by ice cream treats and soda in glass bottles which Mr. Ron provided for the group! He continues to grow more and more excited each day as he dreams about moving into his new home.

Mr. A received a new ramp for his home under the leadership of Tina’s crew. Our volunteers worked hard at gathering materials for this project and laying out the design. By the end of the week, there was a beautiful ramp leading up to his home. He is grateful for this and looking forward to using it in the next weeks. The new crew will apply finishing touches of paint to it next week.

Maureen, better known to MDSers in Diamond as “The Bayou Queen” took her crew to put some finishing touches on house #3 in the Bayou to prepare it for final inspection scheduled for next week.

Our volunteer group blessed the long-term staff by inviting us on an airboat ride Friday night. It was a highlight of the week! We saw Gods’ amazing creation in the swamps, including alligators, frogs, and beautiful flowers! It was a great night of laughter and fun together. We are thankful for the new friends and relationships that were built last week! MDS continues to be a family away from home where together we not only build homes, but we build each other up through encouragement and friendship. God is so faithful!

Blessings from Diamond,

Andy, Jackie, Maureen, Tina, Josh, Jim and Marie, and Martha

Volunteer

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.

Donate

Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
