When Saturday, March 21 was set as the day for the Dedication of the new build in Granite Shoals, some wondered if the house would really be ready so quickly.
It is amazing how much can be accomplished in one work week.
Our volunteers willingly took on whatever task was assigned and a house became a home - the painting was virtually finished, laminate and vinyl flooring laid, kitchen cabinets and vanities installed, doors hung, railings and decks stained, windows cleaned and various other miscellaneous jobs were done cheerfully.
Saturday afternoon required a bit of work in preparation for the dedication but soon all was ready and folks began arriving. Chairs set up in the living room area of the house were filled with guests and many of us stood. The Long-term Recovery Committee chairperson welcomed everyone and spoke briefly. Prayers were offered by Pastor David of First Baptist Church, MDS group recited the Dedication Litany, sang a song, gave Ms. P a Bible, “Hammer Rings Hope” signed by volunteers, a lovely wall hanging quilted by Kathi Downey of CA and keys for her new home. The granddaughter was very excited that afternoon to receive her own gift – a huge, pink, stuffed animal to match the walls in her new bedroom! We were all humbled and deeply moved by Ms. P’s response and the gifts she gave us. She told of the deplorable condition of her previous house, their frequent illness and her prayers for help. Now she is so grateful to God for bringing organizations and people together to answer her prayers. Her sincere appreciation made all the work and time spent on this project so worthwhile! What a privilege to see her happiness and share in the rejoicing.
Food, it seems, especially weekly potlucks, has been a topic of conversation nearly every day. We either talk about what we’ve already done, or what’s planned for the next one! We certainly will remember the delicious supper served at the New Orleans Restaurant (just outside Marble Falls) following the dedication. Thank you to the LTRC for this, another gift, in appreciation for our work.
God brings together people from various geographical locations, different backgrounds, experiences and talents. He uses folks who are obedient and willing to join His plan. How long has He known that the six couples in our team would meet here in the hill country of Texas, join forces at a work site and together finish this home for Ms. P? We can only wonder and say, “Thank you”.

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.
Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
