This week we had a group of thirteen from Pennsylvania and a couple from Indiana. It was a bit of a crazy week with the need to complete five jobs and begin to shut the Mobile site down, but we couldn’t have had a better group for this.
We had a home dedication for the completed home of Mrs. J. on Tuesday, attended by Mrs. J. and her teenage son, Pastor J.D. Landis and his wife, and our volunteers. Mrs. J. shared her very moving story with the volunteers. Mrs. J. and her son joined us for supper.
On Wednesday we had another home dedication for Mrs. G. where we had finished painting and trimming out the interior. Mrs. G. played the guitar and sang for the volunteers at the dedication. We also presented an MDS t-shirt to Mrs. G.’s adult son, who spent hours every week working with our volunteers to repair his mother’s house. Mrs. G.’s husband was in the hospital and unfortunately could not attend. Our prayers are with him as he recuperates.
Thursday, we dedicated Mr. and Mrs. H.’s home, also with Pastor J.D. and his wife present, along with Mike Dillaber who is our contact with Volunteer Mobile. This home was our new build and we wrapped up the last of the finishing work the next day.
At Mrs. W.’s house, a new job just started, we finished dry-walling and painting the interior of the back room, and dining room ceiling, which had suffered extensive water damage from a leaking roof. Two leaking flat roofs were torn down, rebuilt with new lumber and recovered with flat roofing material, as well as two new windows and door installed. Mrs. W.’s grandson also helped with the work and Mrs. W. was very grateful for what we all accomplished.
On Friday we completed the final finishing work in Mrs. C. J.’s house and moved in some furniture including a replacement wardrobe. Her bedroom especially looks beautiful and bright, with new carpets and wall paint. We held a quiet dedication for Mrs. C. J. and Mrs. W. later in the morning.
We also put the final coat of paint on the church house and on Friday afternoon, the volunteers returned from their job sites to disconnect the trailers, pull up the walkways, and help with cleaning on-site. They did a great job!
The couple from Indiana stayed an extra day and continued with site clean-up. We are very grateful for all our volunteers’ hard work and hope our paths will cross again sometime in the future. We wish them the best as we finish closing down the Mobile site in the next few days.

MDS volunteers are known for repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by disasters. But it takes more than construction skills to serve with MDS. During the time that you serve as a volunteer, you will learn that MDS also restores lives.
Your contribution will help to connect volunteers with disaster survivors who need assistance on their path to recovery. MDS depends on the support of people who believe that disaster response is an important part of helping those who are in need.
