Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Shawnee, OK

Disaster Description

Shawnee is located in Pottawatomie County in central Oklahoma, about 40 minutes east of downtown Oklahoma City..

In May 2013, a tornado outbreak affected several parts of the Midwestern US. Over 60 tornados touched down in total, the strongest being an EF5 storm that struck Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City. An EF4 storm moved through Pottawatomie County near Shawnee, and many homes were damaged and destroyed. Overall 29 people died and nearly 400 were injured, with estimated damage up to $5 billion.

MDS Response

Within days of the tornados, MDS volunteers were on the ground with skid steers and chainsaws, cleaning up debris and fallen trees. MDS decided to focus on the small towns and rural areas around Shawnee, while many other organizations went to Moore – the hardest hit city.  MDS will now carry on the work of rebuilding homes destroyed by the tornados, working in collaboration with local recovery groups. Volunteers will be housed at Church of the Harvest in Midwest City, a suburb located about six miles east of Oklahoma City.
