Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Ramona, CA

Disaster Description

The Witch Fire began near Ramona in the area called Witch Creek on October 21, 2007. In only three days it had burned approximately 195,000 acres in San Diego County with over 640 homes destroyed, 250 damaged, and 12 firefighters injured. On October 24 the Witch Fire merged with another fire, the Poomacha Fire. Along with more than ten other fires burning in San Diego County at the same time, the Witch-Poomacah fire helped cause the largest mandatory evacuations in US history, with over 500,000 people displaced.

MDS Response

MDS has set up a temporary camp site at the Ramona Community School which is currently vacant. MDS is partnering with San Diego County and the Department of Planning and Land Use. The Salvation Army and the Local Long-term Recovery Committee are also important partners who assist with case work and funding.
