Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Gary, Indiana

Gary, Indiana,  is located in the northwest corner of Indiana, southeast of Chicago.

Hurricane Ike not only hit the Gulf coast in the fall of 2008, thousands of homes were flooded in Northern Indiana when the storm make its way up through the United States. Nearly 18,000 persons were affected by heavy rains that hit the area following the hurricane. Nearly three years later,  homes are still in need of repair.

MDS Unit and Regional personnel have been involved in the clean up and repair response in Gary for the past two years. MDS is partnering with Lakeshore Area Regional Recovery of Indiana (LARRI) for this project.  MDS project leadership will be working closely with LARRI staff members who are identifying clients in need and suitable work projects for volunteers.

The Indiana/Lower Michigan Unit of MDS is taking the lead on this Region II project.

Youth assisted with rebuilding homes that were flooded by Hurricane Ike in the summer of 2010. MDS volunteers have returned to Gary and youth crews will work there again in the summer of 2011.

If you are intersted in volunteering  at this project, contact the binational office for information on scheduling through the Unit/Region.
