Disaster Description
An EF5 tornado tore through Greensburg, Kansas, a small southwestern Kansas town on Friday May 4, 2007. The tornado wiped out over 95% of homes and ten people died as a result of the tornadoes. The tornado was estimated to be 1.7 miles in width and traveled for nearly 22 miles with winds reaching over 200 miles per hour. Within hours, teams from Mennonite Disaster Service’s Kansas Unit were in the area doing cleanup.

MDS has set up operations for a project near the Greensburg Mennonite Church. Greensburg has a small Mennonite community.

MDS Response
MDS purchased property to set up operations near the Greensburg Mennonite Church. Greensburg has a small Mennonite community which continues to help in the physical work of rebuilding the community. MDS worked with the local community on 32 repair jobs and four complete rebuilds in their efforts to bring hope to many displaced people. Currently the Kansas Unit is scheduling volunteers.
