Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Deweyville, TX

Disaster Description
Deweyville is a small town of approximately 1,000 people. It was established just before 1900 as a sawmill town for local lumber businesses.  The main sawmills closed years ago and in more recent years many residents have found work in the larger towns of Orange and Beaumont.

Hurricane Rita made landfall on September 21, 2005.  The high winds downed many trees and damaged roofs in the Deweyville area.  Like the rest of Newton County, this area received little attention by the media following the Hurricane, and few resources were available to assist persons affected by the storm.

MDS Response

An RV program will be situated at the First Baptist Church in Deweyville, and the volunteers will be building a 2 bedroom house for a client living a few miles outside of the town.

The trusses are up on Miss Jo Ann’s house and it is ready now for the sheeting. The Newton camp program loaned us four young, strong men to help get the trusses up and in place. It won’t be long now and the house will be closed...
