Marble Falls, Texas

Disaster Description

Marble Falls, Texas was founded in 1887. Falls of Limestone which was mistaken as marble let to the naming of the city. A dam has since been build to form Lake Marble Falls on the Colorado River. The falls are now under water and only visible on those rare occasions when the lake is lowered for repairs.

In the summer of 2007 over 18 inches of rain fell in a few hours in the Marble Falls area. Authorities estimate that approximately 150 businesses and homes were damaged by flood waters.

Volunteers serving with MDS built two new homes in the area in the fall of 2008 and winter of 2009. During that time, they stayed at the Camp of the Hills.

Camp of the Hills is a nonprofit 501c3 Christian summer camp located in the Texas Hill Country outside of Marble Falls, TX that serves at-risk youth. The nondenominational camp is celebrating its twentieth year in operation and has served over 9,000 campers with a staff of volunteer counselors and work crews.

In the spring of 2010, one of the camps large buildings caught fire and was reported as a total loss. While the building was insured, insurance will not cover the total cost of rebuilding.

MDS Response

MDS volunteers will work alongside camp personnel in the rebuilding efforts. MDS volunteers will once again be able to park their RV’s on camp property during the rebuilding process.
