Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Ocean Springs RV

Disaster Description

Ocean Springs lies on the eastern shore of Biloxi Bay in Jackson County.  Founded in 1699, it is considered one of the oldest cities in the United States.  Ocean Springs became a popular resort town after a doctor believed that local springs had healing qualities. The abundance of seafood allowed the community to thrive.

Today, approximately 18,000 people live in the Ocean Springs area and the seafood industry continues to bring many people to the area.

Hurricane-force winds reached coastal Mississippi by 2 a.m. on August 29, 2005 and lasted over 17 hours. Hurricane Katrina spawned 11 tornadoes and a 28-foot storm surge which flooded six to 12 miles inland. Many, unable to evacuate, survived by climbing to attics or rooftops, or swimming to higher buildings and trees. Afterward, over 235 people died in Mississippi.  Over 75,000 homes were destroyed or damaged in the six coastal counties in Mississippi.

MDS Response

MDS began working in the Pass Christian and Gulfport areas immediately following the Hurricane.  Since 2005, MDS has hosted over 3,000 volunteers and worked along side over 150 homeowners.  The work in Ocean Springs will consist of some new construction and some repair work.  Partnering agencies, such as the Rotary Club and International Relief and Development work closely with MDS in providing funds for materials and identifying clients in need.
