Responding Rebuilding Restoring

New Iberia, LA

Disaster Description
New Iberia is a large town in the midst of an agricultural region of southern Louisiana. It also services the off shore oil industry. This area is flat land and rises very gradually from the coastline. When hurricane Rita came onshore there was minor wind and rain damage. However, about six hours after the storm had passed, the tidal surge, which had built up in the gulf, came on shore and surprised many who thought they had weathered the storm. Houses as far as 30 miles inland were flooded, damaging the contents and the interior structures. MDS has been assisting with cleaning out houses and with rebuilding. MDS partners with Southern Mutual Help, a local organization that identifies needy clients and secures funding for the rebuilding projects.
