Disaster Description
Tennessee saw record amounts of rain in May, 2010. Dozens of people were killed and thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. Many of the homes affected by the flooding were also damaged by three tornadoes that tore through the area around the same time.
Lyles, TN is located 40 miles southwest of Nashville in Hickman County. Hickman County is a rural area defined by numerous rivers, streams, springs and scenic waterfalls. The small population of approximately 20,000 people is involved in numerous industries such as agriculture, timbering, iron and steel works. Over 18% of the population lives below the poverty line.
MDS Response
MDS volunteers began building relationships with the local long-term recovery committee soon after the storms and through strong partnerships, clients in need and funding are being brought together. Volunteers will be serving throughout Hickman County both doing repair work and building new homes and will be staying at the Cedar Crest Camp, owned by the United Methodist Church.
