he RV Program began in October 2006 in Alabama. The Hackberry site was the second RV site opened by MDS. This site accommodated six- eight RV's.

Hackberry, Louisiana, is 18 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and 25 miles east of the Texas/Louisiana state line. The eye of the storm, Hurricane Rita, passed right through this area and portions of the parish (county) were completely wiped out. The population is around 2000, with about 800 families. There is one grocery store, one bank one hardware store. The sign on the post office says “main” post office suggesting there may be more but, one is all there is. 

This RV site will be open from January to March 2007.

RV Program Description
The MDS RV Program (RVP), based in Hackberry, LA is a special program developed by MDS for retired, semi-retired couples and singles who own or have access to a self-contained recreational vehicle (RV). The RVP will be operated as an independent MDS project.

Volunteers will be couples and individuals who will travel to a binational disaster site to live in their own personal recreational vehicles to volunteer their time in rebuilding, repairing or building new homes. RVP volunteers will commit to work for a specific time with a minimum of four weeks.

In exchange for volunteer work, they will receive RV parking at no expense, with full hookups including a minimum of thirty AMP electrical services, a water hookup and a means of black and gray water disposal.
