Disaster Description
Hurricane-force winds reached coastal Mississippi by 2:00 a.m. on August 29, 2005 and lasted over 17 hours. The hurricane spawned 11 tornadoes and a 28-foot storm surge which flooded six to 12 miles inland. Many, unable to evacuate, survived by climbing to attics or rooftops, or swimming to higher buildings and trees. Afterward, over 235 people died in Mississippi. Thousands of homes were destroyed along the Mississippi Coast.
MDS Response
MDS has been working extensively along the Mississippi Gulf Coast since 2005. After Katrina, over 200 agencies were working in the area to help rebuild. MDS is one of the few remaining agencies still working to bring families home. Partnering agencies, such as the International Relief and Development, work closely with MDS in providing funds for materials and identifying clients in need. The work in Gulfport will consist of building mostly new homes. In addition, some repair work will be completed. The MDS camp is set up at the Grace House in Gulfport where volunteers will be housed and fed.
