Responding Rebuilding Restoring

Chickasaw, MS

Disaster

Chickasaw County was named for the Chickasaw Indians who inhabited this area. It is largely rural with a population of approximately 17,000.

The worst tornado outbreak of 2011 raked across Mississippi and Alabama on April 27, killing hundreds of people. Tornados skipped across southern Chickasaw County, not staying on the ground for long distances, but damaging and destroying many homes. Three people were killed in the county.

MDS Response

MDS will work with the Long-term Recovery Committee to repair and rebuild homes in Chickasaw County. The MDS camp will be located in two houses owned by the Parkway Baptist Church in the town of Houston. These houses have space for both long-term volunteers and short-term volunteers, with parking for several RVs in the yard
